History of ECC La Plata County.

The ECC of La Plata County is one of the original early childhood councils in Colorado.  Established by the Colorado General Assembly in 1997, the ECC began as a pilot program designed to help meet the need for full-day, full-year, quality early childhood services as a partner to welfare reform.  Since then, the ECC has evolved by offering childcare resource and referral services to five counties in Southwest Colorado, thereby helping hundreds of families find high quality child care.  The ECC is focused on increasingly integrating services, so that physical, mental, social, educational, and family support services are coordinated and easy to find.  The ECC depends on its 22 partners to help coordinate these services for children and families.

Colorado is a leader in the nation in supporting early childhood program development at the local level.  Early Childhood Colorado is a statewide program that enlists early childhood partners across Colorado in the vision of a providing a comprehensive, connected network of early learning, health, mental health, and family support/parent education resources to the community.  Colorado has also expanded its local early childhood council network. With the passage of House Bill 1062 in 2007, Colorado expanded the statewide alliance to 30 councils covering 55 counties.
